Powder is perfume with its voice lowered. Where fresh scents read like water and gourmands like syrup, powdery fragrances read like talc and velvet: makeup, clean cashmere, skin after a bath. The chemistry behind the softness is specific, mostly iris and orris, violet, heliotrope and white musks, and the best of it is costly: orris butter, aged for years from iris rhizomes, is one of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery. 1. Narci Poudre W

Narciso Poudree (2016, perfumer Aurelien Guichard) is the white cube that made powder fashionable again: Bulgarian rose and white flowers over the house's signature heart of musc, finished with cedar and vetiver. Narciso Rodriguez has said he could not imagine creating a fragrance without musc, and this is that philosophy dusted in powder, at around AED 700 per 90ml at official UAE retail.

2. Vanilla Poudree

Vanilla Powder (2023, perfumer Aurelien Guichard again, this time for his own house Matiere Premiere) does exactly what its name promises: Madagascar vanilla absolute rendered as powder rather than dessert, with palo santo, a coconut-powder effect and white musks. One hero ingredient, dosed high, at AED 1,162 per 100ml in the UAE.

3. Tient De Neige

Tient De Neige is our own house take on the classic powder archetype, the vintage face-powder style perfumery has loved for a century: soft florals and powdery notes opening onto rose, jasmine and ylang, with musk and vanilla lingering underneath like a compact left open. A MOJ creation for the nostalgics.

Dior Homme Intense (2011, perfumer Francois Demachy) is the powdery masculine, credited with taking iris mainstream in men's perfumery: Tuscan iris over ambrette and pear on Virginia cedar and vetiver. Lipstick-adjacent and completely confident about it, at AED 685 per 100ml in the UAE.

Coromandel (2007 as an eau de toilette, 2016 in eau de parfum, perfumers Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake) comes from Les Exclusifs de Chanel and from a memory: the lacquered Chinese Coromandel screens that lined Gabrielle Chanel's apartment, about which she said she almost fainted with happiness on first sight. 10. Opus 5

Opus V (2011, from Amouage's Library Collection, now renamed Woods Symphony) is the guide's rare book: orris absolute doubled with orris concrete, splashed with rum, and dried down through oud and civet. It is often unavailable even at Amouage itself and at UAE stockists, trading around AED 1,400 when available, with original 2011 bottles now collector pieces.
