Who makes Guerlain perfume

Guerlain does, which is rarer than it sounds. Most designer fragrance is licensed out to L'Oreal or Coty or Puig; Guerlain has composed its own since Pierre-Francois-Pascal Guerlain opened on the rue de Rivoli in 1828, and it has been part of LVMH since the mid 1990s without handing the perfumery to anyone else. The house keeps an in-house master perfumer, a job held by five men over two centuries, four of them Guerlains. Thierry Wasser has held it since 2008. Delphine Jelk joined in 2014 and now shares creation with him as perfumer and creation director, and the four fragrances below are split between the two: Wasser wrote the two Absolus, Jelk the two L'Art et la Matiere.

Two things follow from that. First, Guerlain publishes its own notes, often as a short list of materials rather than a pyramid, and we quote the house before anyone else. Second, Guerlain's exclusives are sold through its own channels first: the 68 Champs-Elysees flagship, open since 1914, and since October 2023 a boutique on Fashion Avenue at Dubai Mall, the first in the UAE. That boutique is why two of the four below can be bought in Dubai at all.

Why the UAE searches for Santal Royal, not Shalimar

Because Santal Royal was made for this market. It launched in autumn 2014 with distribution aimed at the Middle East, Harrods and Dubai before Paris, and it is now the most searched Guerlain fragrance in the UAE, ahead of Cuir Intense and well ahead of Shalimar or Mon Guerlain. In February 2024 Guerlain moved it, with Cuir Intense, Oud Essentiel and two others, out of the bee-bottle line Les Absolus d'Orient and into a new line called Absolus Allegoria, with a new flacon and a reworked formula the house says is more than 90 percent natural origin. The new line launched in the Middle East and Africa first and reached boutiques elsewhere in September 2024. What is on the shelf in Dubai today is that 2024 version, 125 ml, AED 845.

Tobacco Honey and Cherry Oud are a different animal. L'Art et la Matiere is Guerlain's materials line, launched in 2005 and rebuilt in 2021 around a square bottle borrowed from an 1870 design with a bee engraved on the back, refillable, in 50, 100 and 200 ml. It is sold through Guerlain's own channels, with refills at the boutique, and none of the approved department stores in the UAE listed either fragrance when we checked. The four, with the MOJ versions

1. Royal Santal

The one the country searches for. Santal Royal is an eau de parfum composed by Thierry Wasser, launched in 2014 and reissued in 2024 under Absolus Allegoria. Guerlain's own description is a rich wood with a sacred aura: sandalwood, mostly Australian, at the center, with Bulgarian rose, jasmine, amber, leather and oud accords over Guerlain's own musk. It is the sandalwood that behaves like an oud in heat, creamy and dense rather than dry, which is why it sells here and not in Paris. Guerlain's UAE site lists it at AED 845 for 125 ml; Bloomingdale's lists the same price, and Faces had none to sell when we checked. Our Royal Santal reads the house list as sandalwood and rose up top, oud and leather in the heart, jasmine and more sandalwood underneath, and it is the cheapest of our four by a distance. The 30 ml and 50 ml are available; the 100 ml is not at the moment.

2. Intense Cuir

The leather. Cuir Intense launched in 2019 as the sixth Absolu d'Orient, an eau de parfum by Thierry Wasser, who said he wanted to leather the flowers, and it moved with Santal Royal into Absolus Allegoria in 2024. Guerlain lists leather, cedar, sandalwood, tobacco and an osmanthus accord, and calls it a smooth leather between light and shadow. Osmanthus is the trick: the apricot-skin flower makes the leather read suede rather than saddle, so it wears in an office where a raw leather would not. Bloomingdale's and Faces both list the 125 ml at AED 845, and Guerlain's own UAE page showed it unavailable when we checked. Our Intense Cuir follows the house list almost to the word, leather and tobacco up top, cedar and osmanthus in the heart, sandalwood underneath, and all three sizes are available.

3. Honey Tobacco

The newest. Tobacco Honey arrived in September 2023 in L'Art et la Matiere, an eau de parfum by Delphine Jelk, and the house line is that touched by honey, tobacco turns to gold. The tobacco is an accord, not a leaf, built over honey, aniseed and clove, with vanilla, tonka, sesame, sandalwood and oud wood underneath; sesame is the odd one, a toasted nutty edge that keeps the honey from going syrupy. Guerlain's UAE site did not return a readable price for it when we checked, and the line's 100 ml bottles start at AED 1,490 there, so treat that as the range rather than a quote. No approved department store carried it. Our Honey Tobacco keeps the house structure in the same order, honey and clove and anise, then tobacco, vanilla, tonka and sesame, then oud and sandalwood, and it is our most expensive Guerlain reading. All three sizes are available.

4. Cherry Oud

The Gulf one from the Paris line. Cherry Oud launched on September 1, 2022 as one of three L'Art et la Matiere ouds, with Oud Nude and Oud Khol, all by Delphine Jelk, and the house calls it a floral, fruity interpretation of oud wood, with red cherry, Turkish rose absolute and Bulgarian rose essence, a leather accord, cinnamon and cardamom around the oud. It is the brightest oud Guerlain makes, closer to a cherry liqueur than to a majlis, which is why it works for people who find traditional oud too medicinal. Guerlain's UAE site lists the 100 ml at AED 1,490 and the 200 ml at AED 2,150, both unavailable when we checked, and none of the approved department stores carry it. Our Cherry Oud follows the same shape with a longer base, black cherry and spice, then the two roses and leather, then oud, patchouli, sandalwood and smoky woods, and all three sizes are available at the same price as Intense Cuir.

What Guerlain costs in the UAE

Two price bands, and the line decides which. Absolus Allegoria is department-store Guerlain: Santal Royal and Cuir Intense are AED 845 for 125 ml on Guerlain's UAE site, at Bloomingdale's and at Faces, where Santal Royal was unavailable and Cuir Intense listed. L'Art et la Matiere is boutique Guerlain: Cherry Oud is AED 1,490 for 100 ml and AED 2,150 for 200 ml on the UAE site, Tobacco Honey sits in the same range, and neither Faces nor Bloomingdale's nor Ounass carried either. Ounass stocks no Guerlain at all. Marketplaces list the Absolus lower and claim no authorisation from Guerlain; we do not quote them.

Against that, Royal Santal is AED 32 for 30 ml and AED 42 for 50 ml, about an eighth of the original per ml; Intense Cuir is AED 48 to 109, about a sixth; Honey Tobacco AED 54 to 138 and Cherry Oud AED 48 to 109 are each roughly a tenth to a fourteenth of the L'Art et la Matiere price. All four sit in our high-end inspired perfumes collection, and Cherry Oud and Royal Santal also belong with the best oud perfumes, while Intense Cuir sits beside the best leather perfumes.

The Guerlain perfumes you will not find here

Shalimar, the 1925 amber that made the house, has no MOJ reading, and neither do Mon Guerlain, L'Homme Ideal, La Petite Robe Noire or any of the Aqua Allegoria colognes. Of the Absolus Allegoria line we interpret Santal Royal and Cuir Intense only, not Oud Essentiel or Rose Amira, the 2024 addition that launched through Dubai Duty Free. Of L'Art et la Matiere we interpret two of seventeen. If you came for Spiritueuse Double Vanille or Tonka Imperiale, the Dubai Mall boutique is the place, and the counters at Bloomingdale's and Faces carry the mainstream lines.

How to choose between the four

If you want the Guerlain that Dubai actually wears, Royal Santal. If you work in a suit, Intense Cuir, because the osmanthus keeps the leather indoors-polite. If you like sweet and smoky and are buying for winter evenings, Honey Tobacco. If you want oud but every oud you have tried smells like a hospital, Cherry Oud. Three of the four are unisex in practice as well as on the label; Honey Tobacco leans warmer and sweeter and is the one a man and a woman most often share.

On size, 50 ml on Royal Santal, which gets used daily; 30 ml first on Honey Tobacco and Cherry Oud, because honey and cherry are specific tastes. On weather, the two ouds and the leather are October to March scents here, two sprays at most before the cool months and four after; Royal Santal is the one that survives a May afternoon, because sandalwood softens in heat where tobacco and cherry turn loud.
